North American Tour: New York to Lexington (Day 10)

Not much going on today really.  Got up really early and hit the road.  Was able to have a nice drive through upstate New York from Cortland until I picked up the interstate in the west of the state and took it into Pennsylvania.

The most beautiful portion of the trip (and one of the best parts overall) was the travel through the Allegheny mountains in northern Pennsylvania.  I only was able to travel through the upper portion of the mountains, but it was enough to see how beautiful it is.  I followed a biker for a long time – he liked to drive fast, and I was down with that.

I made it to Cleveland around 1:30 pm and picked up my brother Courtland who had flew in from Dallas.  We had good times as we made our way through Ohio, which by the way is an extremely boring drive.  Sorry to my Buckeye friends… but come on, compared to where I have already visited, this viewing experience was especially pathetic.

To make matters worse, the air temperature immediately seemed to rise 15 degrees as soon as I hit Cleveland.  Goodbye to awesome weather – hello to misery.  I’ll be in Dallas by Friday, and it’s been in the 100’s already.  Great.  One good note – Cincinnati is perhaps one of the coolest cities that I have seen – i’ve been through there twice now and downtown (on the river) is absolutely fantastic.  Sorry – no good pictures though – it was too hard to get them during rush hour traffic, and my copilot was a pretty lousy shot.

We decided to push through to Lexington, KY.  We had originally scheduled to stop in Cincinnati but we found a better deal in Lexington, and besides it’s countryside that I wanted to get a better look at and we’ll have a shorter trip for tomorrow (and more time for flexibility).

Sorry for not having many pictures today.  I should be able to get better shots tomorrow, as we have some pretty scenic stuff to see.

Total miles:  Forgot to check again, but I think it’s around 1,820 now.

Tomorrow:  Lexington to Nashville to Memphis.

North American Tour: New York (Cortland)

Good times today friends.

As I mentioned before we arrived yesterday evening to a warm welcome and a great dinner by Brad & Anita, home brewed beer from Dan, and play time for the kids with their cousins Katie & Caroline.

This morning we had a leisurely pancake breakfast, then we were off to the zoo in Syracuse, NY.  It was free (thanks guys) and while we had to dodge some rain on and off, it was a great time and the kids loved it.  Watched the elephant take a animated and extended dump during a live demonstration, much to the chagrin of the handlers.  Had fun staring at the lions – they are creepy and have eyes that stare into your soul.

We drove back to Cortland and stopped for some decent ice cream (they specifically call it ‘hard ice cream’ up here).  I ordered what I thought was a medium sized cone but to my surprise got the biggest cone in the world’s history.  When we got to the house I enjoyed my favorite portion of the day – engaging in a chipping contest with Jason (Megan’s husband).  We played 18 or so ‘holes’ in and around Brad & Anita’s garden (shhh!), over the pond, through the woods, off the backboard, nuthin’ but net.  Unfortunately I didn’t fare very well (I think Jason cheated ha ha).

We ended the evening with another fine, fine meal of London broil roast with spiced potatos, corn, baked beans, and a kickin’ spicy homemade gravy.  Now we are up in our bedroom chilling, and I’m watching a pretty cool show on VH1 called ‘The Great Debate’ (not the movie).

Tomorrow it’s off to Cleveland to pick up my brother Courtland (no relation to the city), and then to Cincinnati.  Take care – i’ll catch up with you soon.  Check out the pics.

Days travelled:  9.

Miles travelled:  1115.

Tomorrow:  To Cincinnati via Cleveland.

North American Tour: Montreal (Days 5, 6 & 7)

Our time in the great white north is officially over.  I miss my wife, and the kids miss their mommy.  We had an outstanding time, and Montreal is one of the coolest places I have been.

For one, the weather is outright perfect!  If you know me well, you know that I love cold weather, and while 65 isn’t considered cold in most circles it is definitely cold compared to the 95’s we are getting in the ATL.  So far the entire northern part of the trip has been in outstanding weather (and by northern I mean north of the Georgia border!).

The architecture of the buildings in the city is amazing – especially in the old part of Montreal.  They have cobblestone streets, horse drawn carriages, and it all sits right on the water.  It is much like a cross between San Francisco and New York.  All the signs (and I mean all) are in French – Quebec has two official languages and English is the secondary one.  Fret not if you travel to Montreal though, because everyone speaks english very well.  However have fun reading the road signs – it’s a good thing I know what the red octagon means!  Also, I found a few things entertaining in the French language.  We say ‘please’.  They say S.V.P.  That’s right.  They write it as ‘S.V.P.’, which stands for ‘S’il Vous Plait’ meaning ‘if you please’.  Sounds like a long way to go to just say please.

Look, I’m pretty tired, so I’m done talking about this for now.  I have more to share, so i’ll post some more on this subject later.

I am in upstate New York today, visiting Sarah’s cousins, aunt & uncle.  They are awesome people, and I love hanging out with them.  I think we are planning on going to the zoo tomorrow.  We had a killer meal tonight prepared by Brand & Anita, and Dan brought some home brewed beer for our enjoyment.  The kids are having a great time playing with their cousins Katie & Caroline, so this is a great visit already.

More later.  I’ll be here until Wednesday morning, then I’m off to the next stop.  Still to come:  Cleveland, Cincinnati, Louisville, Nashville, Memphis, Dallas, St. Petersburg, Tampa Bay, and finally Vero Beach before I head to the house.

Miles today:  ???  I didn’t look before I came in.  Too tired.  Let’s just say it was a boatload.

Waypoints:  Montreal, rural Quebec, the Adirondack mountains in New York, and finally Cortland, NY.

Tomorrow:  Cortland, NY.

North American Tour: Day 4 – Boston to Montreal.

So far this has been the most scenic drive of all. New Hampshire is what’s up! Vermont is perhaps one of the most beautiful states in the US 50. The drive from the Canadian border was surreal – farm land as far as the eye can see, beautiful scenery, strange looking signs, and awesome weather made this the top drive of all thus far.

Sandy and I had a great breakfast with Jon & Lisa, and said goodbye around mid-morning. We left in the rain, drove in the rain, and will probably be in the rain the rest of the weekend here in Montreal. Lisa said they have had two weeks solid of showers in Boston, and will get rain all week. I think that is cool – too bad the grass is always greener on the other side, right?!?

The kids did great again, and have enjoyed being in the ‘big city’. We had a bit of a frustration when we were 15 miles out of Montreal, because we hit bumper-to-bumper traffic and crawled until we crossed the downtown river (St. Lawrence). Once we arrived it was worth it though.  Montreal is fantastic – much like NYC and other really great cities – big, sophisticated, very fashion forward, trendy, and modern, and of course everyone speaks french here. It is very forigen, yet recognizable as well, and you all know that Canada is United States LITE.

We had a great night of walking the city and having dinner, and we are back the the hotel chillin before the kids turned into pumpkins. I won’t be posting pictures tonight because my battery died on my camera ;-0  I’ll put a double-dose up tomorrow.

Miles today: 329

Waypoints: New Hampshire, Vermont, Canadian border, Canadian countryside, Montreal.

Tomorrow: Montreal.

North American Tour: Day 3 – Boston.

It rained all day today. For all my friends and family in the hot south, I have posted a picture of what this event looks like.

We took the kids and cruised down to the Children’s Museum of Science & History in downtown Boston. Had a brief look at Harvard and MIT, and once again had a generally good and adventurous day. Jon and Lisa whipped up some killer homemade waffles and white chocolate lattes for me this morning, and that started off things very well! I ’suggested’ that they load me up with some of those for my departure. I’ve requested a ‘5 shot’ drink.

Lots of playing – some outside in the drizzle, some in the house. The kids had fun playing with their cousins Erin & little Johnny. Caelan even managed to get into some paint that she was not supposed to find, and fortunately she only got it on herself (not the furniture)! Have had a great time here, and Jon & Lisa have been outstanding hosts. The weather has been great also – mid 60’s both days.

Picked up my mother-in-law Sandy at Logan airport tonight, and she will be accompanying for the next few days on my tour. I’m tired now – been ‘on duty’ for awhile and that is tough. Must be tough to be a single mom or dad, and I respect that. Off to Montreal tomorrow to see Sarah and have a grand time.

Miles Today: 45

Waypoints: None

Tomorrow: Boston to Montreal

North American Tour: Day 2 – Baltimore to Boston

Today didn’t start off very well at all.

I was awakened to the sound of my son hurling in his hotel room bed at 2:10 in the morning. Of course there weren’t any spare linens in the closet, so I had to shift the sheet and covers over so the kids could sleep warmly without lying in puke (although they were lying nearby it!). At 4:30 in the morning my son had a nice fat bout of diarrhea from food poisoning – he tried to make it to the potty, but he missed. I spend the next 20 minutes cleaning up crap off the bathroom floor with Kleenex tissues and hotel washclothes. That just plain sucked. Needless to say we started off on our journey late – I tried to sleep in a little, but really all I managed to do was waste some of the morning being grumpy.

We had a nice drive though the rest of Maryland and into Delaware and let me tell you, the 5-0 were definately out in force in that little state. They had these really cool unmarked cars that looked like station wagon / minivans and were plain jane colors. Totally busting folks. Not me though – God’s favor was on me today ;) . One other note: Between Baltimore and NY I must have paid $2000 + two arms and legs in tolls! The tolls are a rip-off! On one section of the turnpike it was $8 just to enter a state! I don’t remember which one it was, but I’m sure it wasn’t worth it (no state is (except Texas of course)).

Becuase of the late start I didn’t stop in Philadelphia, and it’s a shame I didn’t. I really like Philadelphia – it has some really, really cool places and buildings – it’s a lot like NY and Boston. I had fun making a wrong turn downtown, but that was it as far as sightseening went. I did however get a chance to give a nice salute out to the Philadelphia Eagles when I passed their football stadium.

The highlight of the day of course was New York. No doubt about it, that is an incredible city. Washington D.C. and New York are probably my two favorite cities (that I have been to). While I have been to NY on other occasions, this was the first time I had been with children (not counting myself). I was amazed at how kid friendly the city is – no joke! We drove in with one purpose in mind, and that was to hit up the Magnolia Bakery for some crazy delicious cupcakes (as featured in the SNL video ‘Lazy Sunday’). I was able to fulfill a lifelong dream – drive in NY. Loved it! You can drive as agressive as you want to – and boy did I take advantage of that! We parked somehwere in SoHo, and walked about 10 or so blocks to the bakery, stopping along the way at a garden courtyard on the property of a local church.

We needed to find a restroom, and if you’ve been to NY, you know how sucky that can be for anyone let alone kids. While looking for one I stumbled across a full fledged public playground right in the city! In the Greenwich Village Historic District, right in between a triangle of busy streets and a cacophony of buildings, the playground was nestled like a desert mirage. On top of this it had a nice public restroom.

We played for awhile, and then started our way back (stopping one more time at a park on the Hudson River). Not only did I drive in NY, but I drove in rush hour traffic in the rain. I loved it. The kids were once again outstanding, and they are already starting to become seasoned and hardened travelers. We took our time, but eventually made it to our destination in Boston. We are staying with Sarah’s cousin Jon and his wife Lisa. They have two really cool kids (and cousins of C & C). There will be ample playing for all tomorrow as well as adventure on some level.

Tomorrow: Boston.

Total Miles Today: 429.

Waypoints: Baltimore, Delaware, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York (city), Boston.

North American Tour: Day 1 – Atlanta to Baltimore

I have to say, all in all it was a fine day.

It started off on the wrong foot though.  I had intended to get a good nights sleep in and was in bed by 9:00.  Normally I am up until 2 or 3 in the morning, and unfortunately that fact got in the way of my grand master plan.  I intended to be asleep by 10:00 at the latest – I ended up falling asleep around 4:00 am, and tossed and turned until I woke up at 5:10!

We rolled out at 5:55 am, and from the get-go it was a good trip.  I know I am not necessarily objective here, but my kids were in fact, awesome.  No really, they were outstanding and very well behaved.  They didn’t even bust each other’s chops!  We’ll see how that turns out after a few more days though.  Punks.

The kids loaded up with Barbie, Polly Pockets, Bakugan (sp?), and transformer toys, as well as a Netflix worthy collection of movies, and they were thoroughly entertained the whole way.

We had a nice stop at the Crack-house for Kids (McDonalds) in the afternoon.  We walked in at the same time as another dad and his boy.  My kids and I went to the counter and ordered while this guy and his kid went to the restroom first.  Turns out we were the only ones there at the counter.  That changed in a blink, as seconds after the guy entered the restroom a bus load (a freaking bus load!) of teenagers (a church youth group or something) came into the resturant like ants, and I mean they flat out loaded up that McDonalds.  That poor guy and his kid came out of the bathroom and immediately wore a beat-down expression on his face.  I felt bad for the guy.  They didn’t even bother to get in line (it was out the door).  For a moment I thought about letting him have my spot in line…. but that passed.

Having two kids by myself is a challenge on a trip like this, right?  Well, Caelan decided that she wanted to up the ante for me, and had diarrhea – three episodes – fortunately all in the potty not anywhere else.  But man, what’s up with that?!?  She also decided to hurl for me later in the day right in her car seat – and right during the industrial section of Richmond, VA, when there was really nowhere to stop.  Poor girl.  On her birthday too!

Well, that’s enough about today.  It was fun – I love adventure, driving, and hanging with my pimp and princess, so it was cool.  The kids miss their mommy, and I miss my wife.  Fun times though.

Tomorrow:  Philadelphia, New York (Manhattan & Central Park), and the to Boston (God willing).

Total miles today:  713.

Waypoints:  The Carolinas, Virginia, Annapolis, Washington D.C., Baltimore.

You can check out pictures from today under the photos tab.
