All before the end of July — mostly by myself with Caden & Caelan.

Heading out on Monday.  You can track my location via this here website.

And don’t think that because i’m gone that you can help yourself to my house and my belongings.  I have a good friend staying at the house, and three big dogs that will kill on site.  You’ll get messed up, long time.

Why It Even Matters

Brace yourself!

This is an explanation for clarity addressing a previous comment about an apologetics (defense of the faith) podcast on whether God is “timeless” (removed and independent of time) or “Everlasting throughout time” (enduring all eternity). It’s rather lengthy, exhaustive and at times perhaps a bit disjointed, but I believe it will benefit any and all who read it.

I feel this issue is relevant as it relates to God’s providence, his care for his people. God’s timelessness is an example of his limitlessness, and his choice to endure within time is an example of his sympathetic nature. This is important to those who have experienced the loss of a loved one or some other great tragedy and wonder “Where was God in all of this?” or even “Is God in any of this?”

A very popular book currently out, called The Shack (which I read this past fall and actually found rather entertaining), deals with this issue. The book gives a comforting, though rather unorthodox, portrayal of God, and it is very creative in its display of God’s loving attitude for his people. However, the book is littered with biblical error. It presents a limited, one-sided view of the Lord and at times submits scripturally inaccurate information.

I understand that this book is fiction and doesn’t profess to be adequate for use as a person’s sole source for knowing the God of the Bible, but unfortunately that is precisely what is happening. Individuals who have hardly set foot in their church in years and may not even own a Bible are being “introduced” to the Lord, so to speak, by reading this book, probably by through the enthusiastic persuasion of a well-meaning friend. One might say, “What’s wrong with that? Why is it bad for people to learn that God is a loving God?” Those are great questions! The truth is that it is NOT bad for people to know their God loves them. In fact, that’s the entire message of the Bible from cover to cover.

Christ said, “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13). We all know this to be true. When people want to convey deep love for another they often state that they would die for them.

God’s greatest demonstration of love for us isn’t that he heals the sick or comforts the wounded heart (which he does), but that he willingly laid his life down for us. This gesture of love is not fully appreciated however, unless one can understand why he laid down his life. Why was it necessary? To comprehend this fully, one must realize something uncomfortable, something dark, and something unpopular, something many pastors of mega-churches avoid talking about and The Shack completely ignores. I’m referring to the dilemma of sin. Think with me a moment if you will.

Although they are important to address, the most relevant cosmic questions of the universe are not “How did we get here?” or “Why are we here?” but “How can the imperfect know the perfect?” “How can what is limited know the unlimited” Don’t believe me? Try to fathom eternity if you can. Try to wrap your mind around infinity. Can you picture the edge of the universe and then push past it? What’s out there?

We acknowledge that infinity exists. Mathematicians for centuries, even for millennia, have been using the infinite value of Pi to calculate the dimensions of circular objects, but they have yet to find its final digit even with the most powerful computers. …continue reading Why It Even Matters

Wild Animal

Pride Sucks

I'M THE MAN!

Everyone fights pride. We all have to be someone. We all have to be important.  We have to ‘look out for number one man!’.

It’s easy to say things like: “I don’t care who gets the credit” until you are overlooked in the credits.  Pride directs you to remember that.

It’s easy to say to a friend, “sure, i’ll help you with [moving, painting your house, whatever]“, until the day comes when it is time to help, and then ’something comes up’.  Pride asked you to change your schedule, because your comfort level and how you feel is what is really important.

No love here

No love here

Pride is a wild animal. When it gets backed into a corner, it fights. When it is getting killed off, it lashes out.

This same wild animal directs you to judge people, based on their looks.  Sum them up – take a snapshot – I like ‘em or I don’t.  Thanks, pride.

Me, me, me, me.  It’s all about me.  What a good friend you are pride.  Cheers to you!

Pride stalks you, and tries to convince you that everything is cool with shades.  ‘You are the man!’ it tells you.

Pretty soon we are so puffed up of our own BS that we take our eyes off the REAL ‘MAN’.

We all want to be "the man"

Tried to be THE MAN.

The best of all of God’s angels, Lucifer, was attacked by Pride.  He succumbed, poor guy.  Now he tries to bite others and give them rabies too.

Pride comes before the fall.

Pride’s best friend is Selfishness.  Those two guys are the ones at the party who you want to leave, but don’t have the nerve to kick out.

They are the drugs that fly you to the stars, while you are really lying on the floor.

Whoever you are, and whatever you do, you have to fight pride.  Pride will rob you, and leave you left for dead at the side of the road.

Here’s Looking at You

I was talking with a friend of mine the other day about Facebook.  With no small amount of chagrin, we lamented that we are in fact addicted to Facebook for many reasons.  One of the best features that we both like is the status updates.  Some people can really make you laugh, and it is always entertaining to read them.  She said, “I always feel pressure to come up with something witty to say.”

I thought of something when she said that.  She made a very interesting observation and a very basic look at human nature.  Just like in most social situations, we are concerned about how we look and how we are coming across to others.  No matter how secure you are, you want to look your best.  Even realizing this, it is still hard to consciously keep this in mind when you are in social situations.

I like to be amused when I read status updates just like everyone, but even the ones that might be considered ‘dull’ are just as entertaining because I just like to keep up with my friends and see what is going on in their lives.  You don’t have to be witty to connect with someone, and if everyone is looking at themselves then why should it matter what you look like?

A few days ago I watched Alex Rodriguez of the NY Yankees confess in a television interview that he used steroids several years back.  For those of you who don’t follow sports, hate baseball, or just don’t care, A-Rod (as he is called) is one of the biggest sports stars in the world.  He is good at what he does, makes enough money to run a small country, and dates Madonna (or did!).  The fact that he admitted that he did steroids is a big deal, but that’s not what I want to focus on.  It was pointed out by Peter Gammons (the guy who did the interview) that A-Rod was very emotional (although emotionally focused on camera), and astonishingly seemed to be insecure about his image, etc.  I am paraphrasing a little with his wording, so that is not a direct quote, but he basically noticed that here is a guy with ‘everything’ and he is still worried about what others think, just like you and me.  Colin Cowherd (of ESPN radio) also noted on his radio show today that “The bigger the star, the bigger the insecurity.  That’s what makes them successful and drives them.”

Why do we all long to be important and accepted?  Why do we all worry about what others think?  Why do we all on our basic level of human nature have a need to be secure?

After God created the world, and after Adam and Eve did their little ego stunt and got kicked out of the garden of Eden, they starting having kids (including the famous Cain & Abel), and generations of descendants began to roam the earth.  They did some work during the day, had dinner and watched movies at night, hung out on the weekends, and just basically lived life.

But that wasn’t good enough for people – they realized something was missing - and the Bible says that they “began to call upon the name of the LORD”.  They were restless, and realized that they needed God, his connection, and his security.

Inside each one of us the longing to connect with our Lord God – the creator of all the universe.  It is demonstrated in life in many ways, and I am only touching on one little example of how that is relevant in daily life and in society.

We all have that need, and when things are going great, we can mask it but it never goes away – it just gets supressed.  Just living in the Matrix, digging the scene.  Even the greatest, most ‘fulfilled’ people in society have that need, and it is easy to see if you are looking.

We have magnets inside of us, and they pull us to our Lord God.  You can’t see the pull, but it’s there, and it’s always on.  Our security comes from our Lord – through God’s son Jesus, to be specific.  Connect with him, and find the meaning of life.

Some Things I am Thinking About

Sometimes it’s just hard to know what to talk about.  I have many ideas running around through my head at all times, just like you, but what do I want to make public – how vulnerable do I want to make myself?  It’s one thing to talk about something in prayer, or to talk about it to your wife, but to throw things out in a blog are awkward and a little intimidating, you know?  As I ponder that, here are a few other things:

I have been thinking lately primarily on a few issues:

Priorities – I have several things going on in my life, and being a guy that likes structure, I am trying to figure out which activities should be at the top, and which ones should be set down.  There are many variables to deciding something like this – starting with finding out what God wants me to be doing.  In fact, I’d say that is really the only thing to figure out, as “seeking first the kingdom of God” will bring about addition to you.  Studying the word directly, and then reading and studying the defense of the word is my favorite thing to do, and top on my list.  Fitness is big – especially since I cannot run anymore, and I need to consistently cycle or get to cycling classes at the gym.  Music is big to – I am actively studying music theory, and writing individual songs and collaborating with a good friend to make kids music – and this is something I think God is strongly directing me in.  I would say school and movies (leisure) are behind that for now.  Of course, I am not talking about relationship priorities – spending time with my wife and kids, and sowing into my relationship – that of course is a different issue and to be valued differently than any selfish desires.

Tolerance – I’ve been thinking a lot about this word.  It think that I don’t like what is happening to the definition of this word.  I heard someone say the following and I thought is was a good quote:  “Tolerance used to mean that even though you disagree with someone’s viewpoint, you respect each other and agree to disagree.  Nowdays, it means that you need to be accepting and even agree with the other person’s viewpoint”.  I have a problem with this, of course, because the bottom line is that Christianity is exclusive – and that bothers a great deal of people.  Some people say “how can you be tolerant and belive in an exclusive religion??  That is just ‘not right!”  People want to believe in an all encompassing and all accepting religion.  If you are not a person who accepts other worldview, than you are being controversial and inappropriate in society.  Well, of course that is BS – if someone things that I am being ‘intolerant’ because of my convictions, then in reality, aren’t they the ones being intolerant?  Maybe by definition I am intolerant.  Sorry.  More on this later - definitely.

Kids – My boy came home with a poem from school yestarday, one of those that had his handprint on the page and talked about how he is ‘growing up and won’t be this small for long, and you can look at this handprint and remember him’ type of thing.  I cried when I saw it.  Okay, well I didn’t cry, but I got misty.  When I think about my kids, I am continuily reminded at how important it is to show them love, and God’s love, and to impart all I can on them so they can make their own decision for Christ when the time is right.  I realize that my tme with them as young children is going very fast, and will be gone in a blink.

Anyway, as I think of how I want to direct this blog, you can ponder a few of those statements.  Feel free to make comments – I encourage it as a matter of fact – as I want to know what you guys have on your minds!

Apologetics – Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

In case you were wondering what exactly apologetics is:

1 : systematic argumentative discourse in defense as of a doctrine

2 : a branch of theology devoted to the defense of the divine origin and authority of Christianity

Oh Yeah, And By The Way…

Check out this verse from Genesis 1:16:

“God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.”  (NIV)

Here is the same verse from the NASB version:  “God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also.”

So as I’m sure you are aware, the first chapter of Genesis is devoted to the creation of everything in the six days.  Verses 1 – 15 takes us from the beginning up to the point you just read, which is on the third day.  This includes the creation of light, darkness, day, night, evening and morning.  The sky and the land were created, dry ground, seas, seed-bearing plants, the sun, the moon, the Dallas Cowboys, Dr Pepper, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Okay, so He made a lot of cool stuff, and detailed it pretty well in these verses, right?  Obviously, that is very interesting, and God’s greatness is shown immediately here.  We all know that, and it’s not new news to us.

But take a look at the end of verse 16:  “He made the stars, also”.

He made the stars also?!?

Like as in ‘oh yeah, and by the way, let me throw some stars up there for some color.  you know, to give the painting some texture or something.‘  It’s almost as if he created the stars as an afterthought – or just for the fun of it!

Of course, God didn’t haphazardly create anything, and he certainly planned all of his creations – but what I want to point out is that there is great detail given to the creation of everything that relates to you and me from an earthly standpoint – our planet, our living surface, our flora, and our main lights (sun and moon).  Yet the entire expanse of the universe – greater than we can imagine with galaxies and supernovas and black holes and light years and light years of stars – were just put up there ‘also’, in one sentence.  The entire universe in all it’s infinite entirety, is five words.

How big is God!  And what does that tell us about what he thinks about us?!?  His main focus was on our planet – our living area – us, us, us – not the great expanse of cool things out in infinity and beyond.  What does that matter to him?!?  We are who matters to the one who created everything!

Some people think it is inconceivable that we are all alone in the universe, because we are such a small little pinpoint in the universe.  I personally don’t think that there is life anywhere else – at least not life with a spirit.  God created us in his own image, and we are the only thing he cares about.  Everything important to him is right here on planet Houston (sorry, Superman reference).

So when you look at the stars tonight, remember this:  God loves us so much that he focuses all his primary attention on us here on this little planet in the great expanse of the universe.  His is so big, that he created all the millions and millions of stars and other cool things, just to fill up space so to speak.

This is the God we talk to.  This is the God who loves you.  This is the God who knows you.

Yeah, that’s pretty pimping.

Strange How Those Things Happen

“It’s amazing the effect we can have on others when we feel powerless ourselves”. That’s what my wife said to me today.

That is a really good observation – in fact, when we realize how powerless we really are, we can then be used by God.

I emailed a guy I used to go to high school with last night, to ask him to forgive me for being a bully, etc. He responded back with forgiveness, and plenty of good humor. I had this guy on my mind for awhile now, and thanks to facebook, I was able to find him.

When I saw his name, and Immediately thought of the proverb “don’t put off for tomorrow what you can take care of today”, because I thought about just letting it go. I’m glad I didn’t though, as it was a chance for God to use me, even if it really wasn’t a big deal to my old friend (and i’ll really never know if it was or not). It was a chance to practically listen and apply what I think I am hearing from God – a chance to learn a little better each day how to discern God’s voice though the Holy Spirit .

When you start to put yourself into the word, and the study of it, you immediately start to see things shift in your life. Immediately. It’s up to you to keep focused, and reap the rewards of doing so.

Anyway, the exterminator guy is spraying outside and I am typing next to the widow, so I’m starting to get high from whatever he is spraying. Besides, my dogs won’t shut up.

This is one of my first blog posts, so it’s not perfect, and i’m already tired of typing.

A Great Resource for Christian Thinkers

This is an outstanding website:  http://www.christianwithabrain.net/

Pretty simple, right?  CHRISTIAN WITH A FREAKING BRAIN!

Too long have we danced around QUESTIONS, and SCRUTINY of our faith.  A lot of times it is becase we are afraid – afraid that we may not like what we find out.  Afraid that we might find ‘holes’ in our faith.  Somethings it fear that we won’t know how to answer questions from athiests and agnostics.  Sometimes we don’t learn more because we want to cruise on through life in our comfort zones (I want to!!).

There are some great sites I am looking into, and this is one of the best for basic, good old fashioned, logical defense using the brain God gave us.

I subscribe to the podcast through my iPhone, and listen to it when i’m driving or whatever.  I have no affenity towards this guy or this podcast, other than the fact that I was just looking for something good on iTunes to discover and came across this.  It rocks.

Go to iTunes, type in ‘Christian with a brain’, and download the free podcast.  Be sure to ‘get all’ episodes, and start from the first one.  Or just listen to the first one, and tell me what you think.

Or, here is the direct link to the podcast on iTunes: viewPodcast

Let me know what you think.
